5 Ways to Set Feel-Good New Year’s Resolutions (That Actually Stick)

3 min read

Once the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, it seems we’re suddenly reminded of all the things that didn’t get done this past year—the dream job, the new book, the fancy yoga inversion—and so onto the list of resolutions they go (again). But what if resolutions didn’t have to be these dreaded tasks that make us feel like a #failure? Here are five ways to create feel-good resolutions you actually want to stick to.

1. Reflect On the Past Year

There’s no need to rush into 2019. Before getting ahead of yourself, take some time to reflect back on the past year. Honor your wins, the lessons you learned and areas in your life you’d like to do better.

As you pop some bubbly with friends and family, spend a little time going around the room sharing your favorite moments from the past year, and some intentions you have moving forward. This provides a framework—and likely some good belly laughs—as you think about your focus for the year ahead.

2. Start With Your WHY

Before you even begin to think about what you want to manifest in 2019, you need to get clear on your why—that is, why you even want said thing to begin with. Unlike goals that are typically material driven, intentions are soul-centered and based upon how you want to feel versus what you want to have. Do you want to feel abundant? Vibrant? Bold? Focused? Financially free?

Once you’re clear on that, come up with a resolution that’s in alignment with your word. If it still feels icky to you, it’s time to take it off the list once and for all!

3. Visualize the Life You Want to Attract

Once you’ve narrowed down your why, it’s time to get crystal clear on what that looks like for you. Consider incorporating some meditation exercises to help quiet your mind and clear any subconscious roadblocks. Then envision your ideal life. Who are the people you’re surrounding yourself with? What does a dream day look like for you? How does it feel?

Now it’s time to put it on paper! Try journaling what came up for you, and then take it a step further by choosing a word or mantra for the New Year or creating a vision board. Feel free to get as creative as you’d like!

4. Get Focused

Don’t just set it and forget it! Once you’re clear on what you want to manifest, aim to focus on it every single week—even if just for a few minutes a day. After all, “Energy flows where attention goes.” One way to stay on track is by purchasing a feel-good planner like The Happy Planner. It goes beyond the mundane to-dos, including space for monthly goals, gratitudes and priorities with inspiring quotes throughout.

5. Let Go & Ask for Help from the Universe

In order to achieve your goals, you certainly have to take some action, but it doesn’t have to be a hustle. Instead, take mindful steps toward your dreams, and then lean on the universe for a little extra help. This releases some of the burden and pressure off of achieving your goals, so you can do so at a pace that works best for you. The Universe Has Your Back by Gabby Bernstein is a great way to help shift your mindset in order to let go of being 100 percent in control (especially for the fellow type A goal-setters out there).
