Ah, DIYs. Sometimes you want to get your Martha Stewart on, walk into the kitchen and CREATE. And sometimes, you just want to throw mashed avocado into your hair and call it day. The great thing about natural beauty is that you can use whole ingredients to craft your very own beauty rituals, while also tapping into that creative streak. I have a few tried and true DIYs I regularly turn to, but I also always need more. So, I’m asking beauty industry experts to share their favorite beauty DIYs with us. These experts know their ingredients like the back of their hands, so you can trust that what they whip up will be a total treat.

It’s no secret that the True Moringa team is a huge fan of moringa trees (they’ve planted over two million of them so far!). Moringa is known locally in Ghana as the “miracle tree” for good reason—just about every part of the tree can be put to good use. Moving from winter into (maybe?) spring though, the thing the entire team loves most about moringa is its ability to nourish parched skin. True Moringa team members in New England are fed up with chilly temperatures, and their team members in Ghana are facing Harmattan season—dusty winds blowing in from the Sahara Desert, leaving everything in their wake bone dry.

The Benefits of a DIY Double Moringa Face Mask
Gram for gram, the leaves of the moringa tree contain more iron than spinach, more protein than yogurt and more calcium than milk. They’re also rich in unique plant hormones that have been shown to stimulate cell growth. The seeds of the tree can be cold-pressed into a deeply moisturizing oil that penetrates deep into the skin rather than resting on the surface like many oils and butters. The waste product of moringa oil processing called “pressmeal” can be used as an organic fertilizer, a protein-rich animal feed and even an agent in water purification.
With lots of moringa oil and moringa powder at their disposal, the True Moringa team has been cooking up some fun moringa-powered masks in the test kitchen to beat the dry skin blues. Here’s one of their favorites.
- 1 Tbsp. (3-4 pumps) pure moringa oil
- 1 Tbsp. moringa powder
- 1 Tbsp. plain organic yogurt (skip this for a vegan option!)
- 1/2 avocado
- Mix ingredients vigorously by hand until mixture is a lightweight, whipped consistency.
- Using a brush or towel, gently dab a thick layer across the face.
- Leave mask in place 10-15 minutes and remove with a warm washcloth. Using fingertips, press an additional pump of moringa oil onto cheeks, forehead, nose and chin to seal in moisture.
And voila! A little solace for dry skin.
