Beauty DIY To Try This Weekend: Nourishing Cocoa Honey Mask
Ah, DIYs. Sometimes you want to get your Martha Stewart on, walk into the kitchen and CREATE. And sometimes, you just want to throw mashed avocado into your hair and call it day. The great thing about natural beauty is that you can use whole ingredients to craft your very own beauty rituals, while also tapping into that creative streak. I have a few tried and true DIYs I regularly turn to, but I also always need more. So, I’m asking beauty industry experts to share their favorite beauty DIYs with us. These experts know their ingredients like the back of their hands, so you can trust that what they whip up will be a total treat.
The Expert: Alycia Washington, DVM, Founder of Cobalt Honey Skincare
Alycia Washington is a veterinarian who fell in love with beauty and honey bees. Calls for veterinarians to get involved in beehive management piqued her interest, as well as the ways our skin benefits from honey (and other goodies in the hive). She combined her interests in honey bees and skincare to create Cobalt Honey, which she uses as a vessel to promote healthy glowing skin, to celebrate honey bees and to contribute to honey bee conservation. While she’s a newbie in the beauty industry (Cobalt Honey Skincare launched in 2018), we love her ethos and asked her to share her favorite beauty DIY.
The Beauty DIY Recipe: Soft and Smooth Cocoa Honey Mask
The Benefits of a DIY Soft and Smooth Cocoa Honey Mask
This simple DIY face mask provides a boost of moisture to skin AND lips, making them ultra soft, smooth and radiant. Honey is full of antioxidants that keep skin clear and healthy in the midst of environmental stressors. Coconut oil sinks into skin quickly, combating dull skin. The touch of lemon has a brightening effect.
- 1 Tbsp. organic, unrefined coconut oil
- 1/2 Tbsp. raw honey (manuka or regular)
- Up to 1/2 tsp. lemon juice (optional)
Put one tablespoon coconut oil in a small bowl. Add ½ tablespoon honey. Mix well with a small spoon or spatula to create a thick paste. If desired, add up to ½ teaspoon lemon juice and mix some more (if your skin is super sensitive, you can leave this out).
Apply the mix to clean face and lips (I like to include my neck too). Apply a small piece of saran wrap to your lips to help seal in the moisture. Luxuriate for 10 minutes, then rinse off with tepid water. Enjoy the smoothness! Follow up with your favorite moisturizer.
This great for a weekly moisture boost, or as needed when weather makes skin super dry.
