Himalayan salt is a big wellness trend for 2018, but what does it actually do and how can you implement it in your wellness routine? Himalayan salt is packed with more than 84 trace minerals and elements that make it incredibly nourishing for the body. It has numerous benefits, from helping the body detoxify to boosting energy to improving digestion and promoting healthy hair, skin and nails.
In my personal wellness practice and with my clients, I love to use Himalayan salt as a supplement to help promote energy and healthy adrenal function. Our adrenal glands are hormone-producing powerhouses that pump out more than 50 hormones, and help regulate metabolic functions such as heart rate, insulin levels and endocrine function.
Over the last 20 years, regular white table salt has been removed from our diets due to concerns that it may raise blood pressure. Whilst the science behind this is widely debated, white salt is heavily processed and bleached, can cause water retention and bloating, and in my opinion, is best removed from the diet.
The flip side? Our adrenal glands require sodium in our diet to properly function. As we remove traditional salt from our diet, we also remove the minerals and electrolytes these glands need for optimum function—which is where our hero Himalayan salt steps in! It’s packed with adrenal supporting sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium, essential minerals that our modern-day diets can often be lacking in.
I love to add Himalayan salt to my savory breakfasts in the morning for an adrenal supporting energy boost and will even add it to a vanilla-flavored smoothie for a salted caramel slant! I also always fly with Himalayan salt to help my body with the demands of travel (yes, you can get it through TSA), but if at home, I love to whip up this this Himalayan Salt + Lime Wellness Tonic first thing in the morning.
Himalayan Salt + Lime Wellness Tonic
- a few slices of lime
- large glass of filtered water
- 1/4 teaspoon Himalayan salt
Before bed, add your slices of lime (more alkalizing than lemon juice and a great boost for the digestive system), your Himalayan salt and your filtered water to a large glass of filtered water. The next morning, add some warm water to further aid digestion, and comfort the body in these chilly winter months. Then, enjoy!
