I Tried an Herbal Sleep Aid—And Here’s What Happened

5 min read

It’s pretty undeniable that sleep is crucial to our overall well-being. Ask any parent of a newborn or someone with insomnia, and you’ll quickly get anecdotal evidence that without those zzzzzzz’s, it’s hard to be a functioning human being.

Sleep helps our bodies and brains detox, gives our organs a chance to process and helps us regenerate for the next day. That’s why my personal cycle of poor sleep has become a bit of a hazard to my health. So, I opted to give natural remedies a try. Here’s what happened when I tested IN:TOTALWELLNESS’ Herbal Sleep Formula.

My Problem: Trouble Falling and Staying Asleep

Anxiety and stress have long been culprits of my inability to fall asleep readily come bedtime. Even when I have a strict and extensive nighttime routine of avoiding screens, creating a ritual that triggers my body to slow down and using essential oils as a sleep balm, sometimes my overactive mind just won’t shut up (or down).

I’ve also always been a super light sleeper. My family still kids me about my high school days, when I would bang on the ceiling above my bedroom if they were too loud when I was trying to fall asleep (yeah, I was a little high strung). Creaks in the floor, a door or drawer opening or sometimes just the sudden presence of another person in the room can wake me up—it’s like I can sense the change in energy.

Add those two tendencies together and you’ve got a recipe for bad sleep, grumpy mornings and days where I can barely make it to 2 p.m. without needing some kind of nap.

My Solution: IN:TOTALWELLNESS’ Herbal Sleep Formula

I’ve tried weighted blankets and an over-the-head pillow to help with my sleep deficiencies, and while they provided great improvements in my sleep hygiene, I was still looking for something a little extra. Something that would help my body systems wind down into peace and calm.

When I heard about IN:TOTALWELLNESS and their Herbal Sleep Formula, I was intrigued for a number of reasons. A) I’ll try pretty much anything that has roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and uses herbs to treat my ailments, and B) it felt like it would add to my nightly routine in a soothing way.

IN:TOTALWELLNESS was born out of a need: The company’s founder, Simone Wan, mother, wife, licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, has been sharing Traditional Chinese Medicine theories since 2001 after she suffered second- and third-degree burns from a terrible explosion in her NYC apartment. She began using plant-based remedies that she had researched while studying to be an acupuncturist/herbalist—and then she was able to stop using conventional medicine to treat her pain and anxiety.

She wanted to share those treatments with others, and created IN:TOTALWELLNESS as a way for more people that just her personal clients to experience the power of plants and herbs. Simone’s Herbal Sleep Formula is packed with medicinal roots, power seeds and beneficial adaptogenic/antioxidant mushrooms. She carefully selected and blended this concoction of herbs based on their millennia of usage in TCM and clinically proven benefits.

When I first learned about the formula, I was really impressed with the types of herbs it utilizes. It’s not just a combo of the typical natural sleep aids. It really leans into ingredients that have clinical backing, and showcases herbs known to help alleviate stress and anxiety, while also promoting deeper, longer sleep. They’re non-habit forming and they can actually increase efficacy over time, as you use them consistently—that’s because they actually help your body adapt, not just shut down functions to make you drowsy.

Plus, all the ingredients are all plant-based, non-GMO and free of gluten and pesticides. The formula also goes through thorough testing for the sake of safety, effectiveness and bio-availability. Each blend is required to pass a rigorous testing process to ensure that they measure up to high standards of quality.

The Results: More Restful, Deeper Sleep—and Better Daytime Focus

The fizzy drink, which can be consumed hot or cold, was a fun little nighttime ritual. It’s got a pomegranate flavor, and goes down really easily. You drink it 15 to 30 minutes before bed and then start your wind-down routine. I found that just adding this to my pre-bed habit gave my body a signal that it was time to get ready for sleep.

When I actually went to fall asleep, my mind had an easier time shutting down. It was like the spiral of anxiety and ruminating thoughts were put on hold. I could breathe deeply, and drift off in a way that didn’t require what usually felt like strong-arming my mind into relaxation. And it wasn’t just my mind: My whole body felt more relaxed in a natural way, not in that groggy, my-limbs-are-so-heavy way that traditional sleep aids (or Benadryl, which I have resorted to using in dire situations) can.

I also found myself having fewer of the wake-up-at-3-a.m. moments, which are pretty typical for my sleeping routine. Instead of being jolted awake by seemingly nothing (thought TCM would say it correlated to specific organ upset), I slept more soundly. I didn’t even find myself waking up to go to the bathroom, another common occurrence for me normally.

Over the 10 days that I tried it, I noticed an increase in ease of falling asleep too. It was like once my body understood the better rhythm, it was able to adjust and fall into that routine faster. I attribute that to the unique herbal combination of IN:TOTALWELLNESS’ formula. It really felt like something my body had never experienced before.

And here’s the kicker: After I sampled the Herbal Sleep Formula, I then tried to do my bedtime routine without it, and it was much easier to maintain my sleep cycle. I think I’ll go back to IN:TOTALWELLNESS next time I’m having issues with my sleep hygiene, but until then, I’m grateful for the better rest I’m getting now.
