I Tried Daily Harvest Farm-Fresh Frozen Smoothies for Two Weeks—Was It Worth the Hype?
As a mom of a busy one-year-old, I’m always looking for a quick, easy meals and snacks to make for myself. Bonus points if I can prepare it in less than five minutes or eat it one-handed (before the baby gets into the dog treats)!
Unfortunately many of the products out there that fall into this category are packaged snack foods, microwavable meals and fast food. While I’m all about #balance, relying on processed food or fruit and veggie “flavored” snacks just isn’t going to cut it these days. I needed more.
My Problem: My Snack Game Needed a Healthy & Energizing Reboot
I’ve always been pretty good about incorporating nutrient-rich, wholesome meals for the most part, but I needed a little assistance in the snack department.
While they’re undoubtedly delicious, even my “healthier” go-to snacks—like gluten free crackers, plantain chips and string cheese—weren’t doing much for my energy levels. In fact, I found myself crashing by the time I was putting the baby down for her afternoon nap.
Not to mention, my hunger level while nursing the baby is off the charts…and mama needs her fuel. Note to self: Iced coffee does not count as a snack.
It was time to elevate my snack game! I needed a wholesome snack that would:
- Boost my energy
- Satisfy my cravings (and help me cut back on packaged snacks)
- Help me eat more fruits and veggies during the day
- Be super easy to prepare
My Solution: Daily Harvest Plant-Based Smoothies, Delivered Straight to My Door
I knew I needed to look to Mother Nature, and incorporate more whole foods in their natural state. I was super intrigued by the black-and-white Daily Harvest cups I’d seen on the ‘gram and decided to do a little research myself.
I was super impressed to learn that Daily Harvest sources their food straight from nature—partnering with farmers to ensure quality ingredients. The produce is then pre-chopped and flash-frozen to lock in the nutrients, and also maintain freshness.
To get started with the service, you first choose your weekly or monthly plan with 9, 12 and 24-box options. From there, you’re prompted to fill your cart with a mix of smoothies, harvest bowls, soups, oat bowls, chia bowls, lattes and bites—and you can sort by dietary preference, benefits and likes + dislikes.
For my first delivery, I went with the 9-cup option, packed with a variety of their best selling smoothies. On the morning of my Daily Harvest delivery, I sprinted out to the truck to greet the delivery guy. Upon opening my box like a little kid on Christmas, I followed the instructions—storing everything in the freezer and being sure not to touch the dry ice (what they use to keep everything frozen during shipment).
Then for the next two weeks, I enjoyed my Daily Harvest in the afternoon, simply following the instructions on the back of the cup: fill to the top with liquid of choice (like almond milk or coconut water), toss in a blender, then pour everything back in the cup and enjoy. The lid even has a hole to insert a reusable straw, making on-the-go sipping a breeze!
I loved the clean labeling on the packaging, listing each and every ingredient clearly on the cups. Better yet, all the ingredients were ones you could easily recognize like kale, blueberries, coconut, ginger and chia, without any additives or preservatives.
While the smoothies can most certainly be consumed as a complete meal, I personally enjoyed them as a wholesome snack throughout the two weeks. Although I didn’t try any this time around, I love that the company has expanded their offerings—including Harvest Bowls and Soups—a tasty option for lunch and dinner too!
The Results: I Supercharged My Snacking
I had more energy in the afternoon.
Turns out, plant-based smoothies are much more conducive to an energizing, productive afternoon than iced coffee and rice chips. On the days I grabbed a frozen Daily Harvest cup (versus my usual snack), I definitely noticed an increase in my energy levels. I felt clear-headed, focused and ready to take on the rest of the day working and momming!
I didn’t really crave the packaged stuff.
I loved that the smoothies are made with real, whole foods that are not only delicious but also filling. For two weeks, I swapped my go-to afternoon snacks for smoothies, and didn’t really miss the other stuff all that much. From the Cold Brew + Almond Smoothie I reached for to fuel my 5K to the Mint + Cacao Smoothie as a chocolaty on-the-go treat, the flavor profiles did not disappoint.
It took my smoothie game to the next level.
Before Daily Harvest, my smoothies were admittedly a bit boring—usually a simple mix of banana, nut milk, spinach and maybe some protein powder. I loved the variety of fruits, vegetables and superfoods packed into the Daily Harvest cups—from leafy greens and dragon fruit to cacao nibs and chlorella.
The variety kept my taste buds wanting more, and naturally increased my fruit and veggie intake tenfold.
The Verdict: Pricy but Efficient and Filling
I really loved the convenience of Daily Harvest, and think the service would be especially helpful for busy professionals, college students and moms (especially new moms). I really wished I had signed up for this during the early days of parenting, when you’re literally running off coffee attached to a newborn!
I also like that your meals show up right at your doorstep, farm-frozen and ready to go. For my next order, I’d definitely want to try more of the savory options like soups and harvest bowls to take the stress away from meal-planning.
My only hesitation would be the price. At $6.99 to $7.75 per cup depending on your plan, that can be pretty steep. That said, you are getting top-notch ingredients—95 percent of them organic.
I’m really grateful that Daily Harvest changed up my afternoon snacking, and I hope to continue incorporating more whole fruits and veggies throughout the day. While I don’t think it’s something I’d order weekly, I’m so happy a delivery is just one click away for those times I need it most.
