I Tried Follain’s Skin Quiz—And Here’s What Happened

6 min read

One of the real-life struggles of making the switch to clean beauty is that you might not live in an area with a trusted beauty boutique, where you can peruse the shelves and not worry about having to decipher the ingredient lists on every bottle. One where you can flag down a consultant who is knowledgeable enough to answer your skin-specific questions and give you personalized recommendations. One where you know that the products you’re purchasing are safe and good for you and your skin.

Since we live in the era of abundant online shopping, it was only a matter of time before a clean beauty shop pioneered an online experience crafted to replicate that in-person connection you get when you pop into a shop. Follain, a clean beauty boutique on the forefront of both brick-and-mortar and online shopping, recently launched a new, in-depth online Skin Quiz meant to capture some of the magic of an in-person skin consultation. If you can’t make it to one of their six storefronts, the Skin Quiz will give you personalized recommendations, suited to your skin’s needs in just minutes.

Being the skincare junkie that I am, I wanted to give this online experience a go to see if it indeed could provide as beneficial a result as talking to a person about my skin concerns.

Keep reading to see what happened when I tried Follain’s Skin Quiz.

My Problem: Dry, Sensitive Skin with Blemish-Prone Tendencies

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had sensitive skin. If I’m going to have a reaction to something, it’s going to come out on my face, whether that’s an ingredient applied topically (my skin can crack, peel or swell) or an antibiotic (I get angry, red, itchy hives). I bruise like a peach, and for a long time, I couldn’t use any oils on my face, despite the fact that they’re meant to be good for your skin.

Compound that with a tendency towards dehydration and breakouts, and you’ve got my face. It doesn’t retain moisture very well, and it’s only happy with a few products, with choice ingredients. All of that is a bummer for obvious reasons and because I happen to love trying new skincare.

The Solution: Product Recommendations Via Follain’s Skin Quiz

When Follain re-launched their online Skin Quiz in early 2019, I was eager to see if its results could relieve any of my skin concerns. What drew me to it was two-fold: Follain is a trusted clean beauty boutique. Its staff has already done the research to pick only the best and safest personal care products to sell, so I don’t have to worry about ending up with a recommendation that I won’t buy because of an ingredient I don’t trust.

Secondly, they promise to match me to products that work with my skin type, given the information I provide. And since I know my skin better than anyone else, it seems like a perfect marriage of my firsthand knowledge and Follain’s expert picks.

The Treatment: A Four-Product Regime for Dry, Sensitive Skin

The first thing I did was actually take the Skin Quiz at follain.com. It’s a series of questions that get into the details of how your skin operates, and what concerns you have. Since it’s all self-guided, you can do it at any time, and get your results right away.

My results pulled up four product recommendations, all for dry or dehydrated, sensitive skin. Here’s what my new regime, according to the Skin Quiz, was going to look like:

  1. Osea’s Ocean Cleansing Milk
  2. Osea’s Sea Vitamin Boost Toner
  3. Pai’s Back to Life Hydration Serum
  4. Ursa Major’s Golden Hour Recovery Cream

I was immediately pleased with the routine, as each product was recommended for dry skin and was classified as sensitive-safe. And, looking through the ingredients of the individual products made me excited to try a few new things. My skin and I were eager to get the goods.

The Results: Happy, Calm, Soothed, Hydrated Skin

Normally when I try a new product, I go to extensive measures (including tracking results on a spreadsheet) to ensure I can isolate an ingredient or a product that causes a problem. Because usually, new products cause problems for me and my skin.

But for this experiment, I wanted to go all in right away. These products were recommended to be used together to address my skin concerns, and I wanted them to have a chance to interact (and hopefully surprise me with great results).

I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota where the #PolarVortex is very real (like -30 degrees real) and we’ve had the snowiest February in the state’s history. So, I was putting this product regime to the test in intense conditions from the get go, using it morning and night for the last three weeks.

The results were pretty much miraculous in my experience—and I don’t say that lightly. My skin took to all four products immediately, with no tell-tale transition signs of breakouts, dry spots, itchiness or irritation. From the first time I used the regime to the most recent time I used it this morning, my skin has been happy, hydrated, plump and relatively breakout and irritation free.

The Takeaway: Follain’s Skin Quiz = The Perfect Way to Revamp Your Clean Beauty Routine

Yep, I’m calling it. Follain’s Skin Quiz works as well as any in-person skin consult I’ve had. I was suffering with dry and dehydrated, irritated skin and the four-product recommendation I received from the short-but-in-depth quiz helped to clear all that up. My skin is now happier, more even-toned, less flaky and less prone to breakouts. I consider that a mini miracle after the time and money I’ve spent in the past trying to calm and soothe my skin.

What’s more is that if the products hadn’t worked for me, Follain would take them back, thanks to their Perfect Match Guarantee. If you try it and don’t like it, all you have to do is let them know what you didn’t like, and they’ll refund the price in store credit. Then they’ll help you find something else—and they won’t rest until it’s a Perfect Match. Plus, the offer stands any time. So the whole process is risk-free.

I was pleasantly surprised that an online quiz could be as helpful as an in-person consultation, and to me, the convenience of being able to find the best products for my skin while lounging on the couch is more than worth it.
