Make Oil Pulling Easy With Mintycoco

If you’re active in the wellness community, you’ve likely heard of oil pulling, that practice that went fairly mainstream as long ago as 2014. Truth is, oil pulling is actually an ancient Ayurvedic remedy that, like so many of our now-popular healthy living habits, was made more current by lifestyle gurus, beauty bloggers and then a few celebrities of the crunchier variety.

Oil pulling is the daily practice of swishing high quality oil (like coconut or sesame) in your mouth for up to 20 minutes while you shower, get ready, meditate or otherwise relax. It sounds a little intense, right? That’s what I thought when I first tried it a couple years ago. I diligently attempted to swirl the buttery coconut oil in my mouth for the full 20 minutes, but had a really hard time with the texture, taste and feel of it. Plus, I was always getting different amounts—sometimes my mouth felt overly full, like I couldn’t hold all the oil in, and other times it was like I was just swishing too much saliva around. Blech.

But I was determined to keep it up, or at least try to because of the proposed benefits. Swishing anti-bacterial oil around in your mouth has a variety of prescribed benefits that, like most natural health practices, are cumulative and take time to reveal themselves. Proponents of the ritual claim that it promotes overall oral health and detoxification by pulling harmful bacteria, fungus, and other organisms out of your mouth, teeth, gums and even throat. Toxins and bacteria in the body can build up in the mouth and your daily swishing can help draw out these impurities, washing them from your mouth and therefore your body.

Whiter teeth, fresher breath, healthier gums, more hydrated lips and a decrease in blemishes are just a few of the potential benefits of this ancient practice. And because of all that, I really wanted to add it to my daily routine. I work from home, so why couldn’t I swish some oil around while I was answering emails?

Like I said before, straight coconut oil didn’t work for me and I gave up after about a week. I didn’t have sesame oil on hand and olive oil just sounded like too much for me, so I stopped trying to fit oil pulling into my day-to-day.
