#MyCleanBeautyShelf: Meet Cosmetic Chemist + Muskaan Makeup Founder Sabeen Zia
Founder and CEO of Muskaan Makeup, Sabeen Zia, is a bit of a jetsetter. “It may have to do with my childhood,” she says. “I was born overseas in Karachi, Pakistan and moved to the United States at an early age.” She grew up in New Jersey and Massachusetts and then moved to Texas after graduating college with a toxicology degree from Northeastern University, but found herself back on the East Coast for cosmetic science graduate school at Fairleigh Dickinson University. She finally ended up in Philadelphia after getting married a few years ago and says she fell in love with the city.
“Having a science background,” she says, “I’d be in the lab constantly working with formulas and the scientific world of product development. This experience brought me great job opportunities that allowed me to gain experience in not just formulations, but product production, quality control, product development and marketing as well! I even had the opportunity to work with Sephora for many years, which gave me the retail perspective on what consumers are looking for and the gaps that lie within the market.” But that wasn’t quite enough: Creating her own brand had always been Sabeen’s ultimate goal, and why Muskaan Makeup was born—so she can use her expertise, but most importantly use it in a way to give back to the community.
Sabeen’s expertise in chemistry made us so curious about her daily beauty routine. Take a peek inside, with the latest in our #MyCleanBeautyShelf.
My beauty philosophy is…
The definition of beauty has become a subjective term in recent years due to people having a more diverse perception of it. It is no longer about having the perfect skin, hair or body; rather beauty is more about how confident you feel with what you have. I have learned that when you feel comfortable in your own skin, people sense that confidence. So, just dress up that confidence up with some lipstick too! Beauty is also about giving yourself a little TLC—whether it is working out, staying hydrated or most importantly, being happy! It makes a world of difference on your skin and health when you’re just happy!
First thing in the morning, I…
CHUG some water! One of the most important things you can do for your skin is stay hydrated. This really helps me wake up and start prepping for the day. I’m also OBSESSED with masks. I try to get regular facials but I’ll mask away at least once a week to maintain. Fresh recently came out with the Lotus Youth Preserve Rescue Mask. I generously apply that on my skin before brushing my teeth or jumping in the shower. This mask really helps refresh my skin in the morning to prep me for my skincare and makeup routine.
My morning skincare routine
All the essentials: Neogen Green Tea Face Wash Stick (great for any type of skin, especially sensitive); Biologique Recherché Lotion P50 Toner (it burns but then it loves!); Cosrx Triple C Lightening Liquid Serum (has changed my skin is such MAGICAL ways!); Embryolisse Moisturizer, Neogen SPF 30 (best sunscreen ever!); Emryolisse Primer, Charlotte Tillbury Glow Boost. I had cystic acne as a teenager and went through every teenage feeling possible. As an adult, my skin has drastically improved and I need to care for it. Makeup will look great if your skin is taken care of.
My morning haircare routine
It’s so hard to NOT wash my hair. But I’ve managed to train my hair so I can wash it every two days. For in-between days, my go to dry shampoo is Klorane’s Dry Shampoo with oat milk. To wash the hair, lately my favorite shampoo has been Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo and Garnier Avocado Conditioner (I swear, it’s the best!). Before using my DryBar Hairdryer, I’ll spray a bit of Brigeo Leave-In Mask and blow dry away! I also do a weekly DIY hair mask for a few hours—pumpkin seed oil with a few drops of peppermint oil!
My morning makeup routine
I’m the epitome of a product junkie. There are just so many great brands to try so I do! Currently, my daily morning makeup includes Anastasia Eyebrow Pencil, Tarte Eyelash Curler, Mascara, Glossier Concealer, Hourglass Dim Highlighter, Hourglass Bronzer, Ranavant Botanics Face Mist with a Beautyblender. I add foundation and blush if I have meetings.
My favorite beauty tip
Where do I start?! Face mists are the best—if you find the right one! I use them in my mask routine as well as my makeup routine! I’ve found that if I spray my Beautyblender with a face mist and dab it on the skin, it sets your makeup better rather than spraying it directly on. Also, Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream with a Beautyblender is amazing to blend in and/or refresh your makeup. It truly is magic. For hair, after adding the dry shampoo to the roots of your hair, take a round brush and blow dry it in—it helps with blending in the powders without your hair feeling heavy! Lastly, wash your brushes!!
