#MyCleanBeautyShelf: Peek Inside the Morning Routine of Bastide Co-Founder, Shirin von Wulffen

4 min read

Born in Iran to German parents, with an American education and a degree in foreign affairs, Shirin von Wullfen began her career in media and communications in Germany. Shirin was the director of public relations for Gucci, then fashion director for Amica Magazine before moving to Milan to spend six months learning Italian and taking cooking classes. She finally landed in NYC in 2002, where she headed up the North America communication teams for Saint Laurent and Tom Ford, respectively.

In 2015, Shirin and her husband, renowned hair stylist Frédéric Fekkai, joined forces and acquired Côte Bastide, a 30-year-old heritage brand from Frédéric’s hometown of Aix-en-Provence, France. A year later, they launched Bastide, a clean and nontoxic lifestyle and beauty brand with updated packaging reflecting the colors and warmth of the light in the region. Their collection of hand-crafted products is an homage to Aix-en-Provence and was inspired by the healthy, seasonal way of living in the French countryside. For the past two years, they’ve been working with a team of French formulators to develop the skincare collection launched in mid-2019. So what does a German expat with deep fashion roots who spends her time in the south of France use in her daily routine? We got a peek inside the morning ritual of Shirin, in the latest #MyCleanBeautyShelf.

My beauty philosophy is…

Beauty means nourishing yourself completely… your soul, your spirit and your body. The more we are present and centered, the better we feel and the more beautiful we are!

First thing in the morning, I…

NEED an oat milk latté.

My morning skincare routine includes…

Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser and then a spritz of the Tata Harper hydrating floral essence. Next, I take three pumps of Bastide Elixir II to massage on my face. This product is amazing because it applies like a face oil but dries down like a serum. It’s 99 percent natural and has a blend of potent antioxidants and oils to both hydrate and protect the skin against pollution and free radicals. Then I use Tata Harper restorative eye cream to pat around the eyes, and MBR High Protection Sun Screen 30 SPF, and Dr. Hauschka Lip Care Stick to finish it off.

My morning haircare routine includes…

My genius husband, Frédéric Fekkai, just came out with The Pure Collection by The One Atelier Fekkai, the first ever natural collection (95 percent naturally derived ingredients, free of silicones, parabens, phthalates and sulfates) that leaves my hair feeling silky smooth and conditioned. I am in LOVE! I use the shampoo and conditioner and then my favorite is The Pure Mist to detangle, add shine and protect hair against pollutants.

My morning makeup routine includes…

If I have any redness in my face I apply Beauty Counter Dew Skin tinted moisturizer all over my face with a brush to give sheer natural coverage with just a bit of glow. Clé de Peau under eye concealer in almond to cover up dark circles and any spots. Tom Ford eye defining pen for a slight cat eye on my upper lash line and then I blend with Chantecaille mermaid eye color in starfish and then apply Nars Climax mascara to the lashes. I don’t use much lipstick, but when I have a big meeting I love to wear the Kjaer Weis Lip Tint in Passionate to up my game just a bit!

Any makeup or skincare tips you want to share?

I have found that the more you let the skin breathe, the better it gets, so I try to skip foundation whenever I can. The face oil has really helped to build and strengthen the integrity of my skin so I have much less redness and inflammation.

Listening to your body—living in France, I have learned to eat more seasonally and to “listen” to my body for what it need. Taking care of your skin is the same: You really need to listen to your skin and adjust your routine to the needs and seasons. I love having staple products with amazing ingredients so that I can feed my skin whenever it needs it most. For example, I use our Beauté d’Argile purifying clay mask as a spot treatment in the evenings when I feel some impurities coming on, especially in my T-zone. This way I can zap spots before they even come, and my skin is soothed and hydrated at the same time.

What’s your desert island/ can’t-live-without beauty products?
