Sarah Ribner, MBA, entrepreneur and certified aromatherapist is the co-founder of PiperWai Natural Deodorant, the first all-natural, charcoal based, nontoxic deodorant—that actually works. Sarah began her journey with wellness almost a decade ago, transforming her health and skin through clean eating and dedication to an active fitness regimen. Until five years ago, an effective nontoxic, natural deodorant was the missing piece in her quest to lead a healthy lifestyle; from there, she knew this was also the missing piece of a daily regimen for countless others, and thus, PiperWai was born. Here, the entrepreneur opens up about her daily beauty routine—here’s her #MyCleanBeautyShelf.
My beauty philosophy is…
I think of beauty as more of an internal process and everything we put on and in our bodies. Whether it be creams, serums, sprays, makeup or otherwise, these products will only enhance that beauty even further. When we’re using plant-based products, staying hydrated and eating in a way that’s ideal for our individual needs and body types, we get the benefits of feeling great and creating a sustainable beauty that radiates from the inside out.
First thing in the morning, I…
Admittedly, I check my email, Slack—our company messaging platform—and a quick rundown of the latest news. (My morning routine isn’t perfect yet!) The rest of my morning is spent slowing down to focus on the things I need to be nourished and to feel focused for the day. I cook a huge breakfast with a pot of tea, usually Pique Tea, CAP Beauty’s matcha or one of my favorite Paromi blends with a dash of apple cider vinegar, fresh ginger or lemon. I keep my yoga mat in a fairly conspicuous location next to my kitchen, as if to remind myself this absolutely has to be a part of my morning routine; even if it’s only 10 minutes of a few energizing poses, I consider that a workout win!
My morning skincare routine
My skincare routine is quick and simple, yet it covers all the bases including cleanings, toning, nourishing and protecting. I’ve been loving Sunday Riley’s Green Clay Vitamin C Foaming Cleanser, and my homemade face serum, which I’ve been using for the past year. The serum is matcha, rose water and coffee bean oil that leaves my skin practically glowing (full recipe on PiperWai’s blog). I top it off with an SPF 45 daily moisturizer. A few days a week, I’ll add an exfoliator while I cleanse. For oral care, I’m currently experimenting with charcoal toothpastes, alternating between non-charcoal coconut oil-based toothpaste like Hello, topped off with Olas marine bio-active mouthwash.
My morning haircare routine
Hair is a tricky one for me! Growing up, I desperately wanted straight, frizz-less hair and I fell right into the trap of relaxing, heat-styling and piling on any product that claimed to give women “instant frizz ease.” Sure enough, my long, thick hair became brittle and basically broke off halfway up the hair shaft, taking me almost five years to regrow to its full length. I also tried organic keratin a few times, which still resulted in thinner, more fragile hair and terrible split ends.
I’ve put my hair through everything, it rebelled, and now I’m on a natural hair journey that includes the occasional heat styling, but nothing more intense than a blow dry with the Bio Ionic and a quick style with a ceramic/tourmaline curling iron on extra low heat settings. If I decide to go curly, I air dry after a good wash and deep condition with Curlisto Bio-Curl, adding a bit of Briogeo Leave-In Mask Spray and a few drops of black cumin seed oil, a natural hair-growth stimulant packed with nutrients.
My morning makeup routine
My morning makeup routine is non-existent. I swear by my skincare routine, as I’ve been able to control breakouts and hyperpigmentation enough to go all-natural regularly. Depending on the weather, I use Hurraw! vegan lip balm for chapped lips, a quick swipe of RMS Beauty Living Luminizer, and NARS under eye concealer after those extra-long nights staring at a computer screen. Don’t get me wrong, I still love getting dolled up for special events or a night out, but these days I’m much more interested in getting to the heart of a problem rather than just covering it up!
My favorite beauty tip
When it comes to skincare, aromas and moisturizing formulas are pleasant, but our skincare can do so much more. That’s why I love using products with aromatherapy, a powerful way to heal a range of issues related to body, mind and emotions.
