#MyCleanBeautyShelf: The Morning Routine of Monastery Skincare Founder Athena Hewitt
With 20,000 facials under her belt, Athena Hewitt identifies as an esthetician first. But, she launched into the world of skincare creation with the Monastery line. She first experienced the power of aromatherapy and natural skincare in the Greek Cyclades, where her grandmother pressed oil from their own grove and mixed sage, chamomile and rosemary into tonics to purify and heal her skin.
After a decade of studying and practicing skincare and esthetics, Athena realized that technology had not improved on her grandmother’s holistic recipes for purifying and healing skin. In 2011, Athena opened a skincare studio in San Francisco to treat her patients with different methods of oil cleansing, water-free moisturizing, and alcohol and salt-free skincare.
Alongside her practice, Athena introduced a collection of natural skincare — a blend of the best nature has to offer, with essential oils carefully chosen for their non-irritating properties. Each ingredient is of the purest form and highest quality. A tightly curated product range, the line is made in small batches at Monastery’s studio in San Francisco. Let’s take a peek into this maker’s #MyCleanBeautyShelf.
My beauty philosophy is…
You’re as beautiful as you feel that you are! A confident and intelligent woman is the most beautiful to me. Truth!
First thing in the morning, I…
Tend to my son because, at two years old, he definitely comes first… and then I make coffee.
My morning skincare routine includes…
I apply a thin layer of the Lapiz body oil after getting out of the shower. I then apply a layer of our Aloe Hyaluronic Gel to my face and pat a layer of our Gold Healing Serum over that. I top that with a thin layer of the Attar Repair Concentrate and then finish with my homemade SPF. That’s it!
My morning haircare routine includes…
I wash my hair with Hairstory’s New Wash in the morning and that’s it. I let it air dry. I have thick hair and find it difficult to manage, so I have become okay with being extremely low maintenance with it. New wash is perfect for looking great on the first day after washing.
My morning makeup routine includes…
Sometimes I mix a little RMS un cover up with the Attar Repair Concentrate and I apply it to my face I also use a natural lip and cheek color that I make. I also like the Gressa Serum Foundation, but this one I mix with the Gold Healing Serum.
My favorite beauty tip
Stay away from gel cleansers, always. Always provide a barrier between your skin and sunblock. And if you wear sunblock or makeup you HAVE to wash it off at night—if you don’t use either of these things you could be more lax about cleansing at night.
What’s your desert island/can’t-live-without beauty product?
Attar Repair Concentrate. It can transform into anything if it has to! Eye cream, lip butter, moisturizer, hair tamer, cleansing balm, you name it!
