To Try This Weekend: A Gentle But Effective Eye Makeup Remover

3 min read

Ah, DIYs. Sometimes you want to get your Martha Stewart on, walk into the kitchen and CREATE. And sometimes, you just want to throw mashed avocado into your hair and call it day. The great thing about natural beauty is that you can use whole ingredients to craft your very own beauty rituals, while also tapping into that creative streak. I have a few tried and true DIYs I regularly turn to, but I also always need more. So, I’m asking beauty industry experts to share their favorite beauty DIYs with us. These experts know their ingredients like the back of their hands, so you can trust that what they whip up will be a total treat.

The Expert: Meryl Marshall, Co-Founder of Hynt Beauty

Meryl Marshall, co-founder of Hynt Beauty.

Meryl Marshall co-founded Hynt Beauty in 2015 with her husband and the company’s now CEO, Craig. The idea for the the nontoxic makeup and skincare brand was birthed after Meryl conquered a particularly fast growing type of breast cancer that required aggressive treatment. During her treatment, she began to question the ingredient safety of everything that her three boys, and she and her husband used daily, including what they ate, their cleaning and personal care products—and her personal makeup bag. She was appalled by the potentially carcinogenic ingredients in everything.

Over time, she was able to find good clean alternatives, but she found it hard to find a color cosmetics line that met her high standards in clean formulation, professional finish, luxurious texture and satisfying user experience. Meryl had worked in the diamond and fine jewelry business for 20 years prior, so the “experience” aspect was really important to me. That’s when she decided to launch her own line of clean color makeup and skincare that met her high expectations across the board—that skin and health conscientious women could trust and use with assurance.

The Beauty DIY Recipe: Gentle But Effective Eye Makeup Remover

The Benefits of a DIY Gentle But Effective Eye Makeup Remover

It’s gentle on the delicate eye area but it works! There’s no alcohol, but it does have a natural nontoxic preservative, so unlike many other DIY recipes, this one can be used for a longer period if used properly. It also features ingredients that are cleansing, clearing, nurturing and high in antioxidants. It’s like a makeup remover with skincare benefits on the side!

The Ingredients

  • 1 oz. purified water
  • 1 oz. Thayer’s Alcohol Free Witch Hazel Rose Petal Toner
  • 1 Tbsp. organic castor oil
  • 1 Tbsp. organic sunflower seed oil
  • 1/4 tsp. arrowroot powder (to help thicken)
  • 15 grams organic gotu kola powder
  • 15 grams organic matcha green tea powder
  • 1/8 tsp. sodium citrate (pH adjuster and preservative)
  • Bottle for storage

The Instructions

In a glass bowl, combine all ingredients and whisk briskly. Use a funnel to pour into your bottle. Shake well before each application. Dispense onto a clean washcloth or organic cotton pad. Gently remove eye makeup by continually using clean area of cloth saturated with remover until all is removed. Cleanse and rise entire face well, as you normally would.

Use any time you need to cleanse your face of eye makeup. Meryl recommends creating the remover in smaller batches to maintain its freshness.

If You Aren’t in the Mood to DIY…

Hynt Beauty’s Sun Prep Broad Spectrum SPF 25 is a must-try from the line. It’s an SPF + primer + skincare, all in one. Packed with organic extracts and oils, the unique formula feels light on the skin, doesn’t leave a white residue and feels like a light primer formula rather than sun block. It also smoothes out the skin while hydrating. This is the perfect daily sun block for a work day or beach day.
